The Annals of Surgical Oncology completed its 10th volume in 2003 and has undergone numerous changes. The Annals began by publishing bimonthly and in 2004 will expand to 12 issues per year. The increased frequency reflects an increase in number and quality of submissions to the journal. It will enable authors to get their manuscripts published earlier and provide readers of the Annals to have access to the latest information every month.

In 1998 the Annals was honored to be listed in Index Medicus. In our first year of ranking, the impact factor ranking by the Institute of Scientific Information placed the Annals as 23rd out of 128 surgical journals worldwide. The impact factor reflects the level of excellence of the journal as reflected by reference citations to its published articles in other medical journals. Each year the Annals has continued to improve in the ranking, and in 2002 our ranking was 4th out of 141 surgical journals (note that the journal ranked #3 was actually a surgical pathology journal). Articles published in the Annals were cited a total of 2241 times in 2002, which gives us an impact factor of 3.824. When the journal was evaluated in the oncology category, the initial ranking based on citations and impact factor was 41 out of 104 oncology journals. Each year we have continued to improve, and in 2002 we were ranked as 22nd out of 114 oncology journals.

In 2002 the Annals began publishing full text online. All content from each issue is available at www.annalssurgicaloncology.org. In 2003 the Annals launched the Early Release feature on the Web site, with the aim of providing readers with journal content at the earliest possible time. Thus, all articles expected to have a substantial and immediate impact are posted 1 to 6 weeks prior to their appearance in the print journal.

The success of the Annals of Surgical Oncology is due to the support of the Society of Surgical Oncology members as its primary readership and to the commitment and hard work of the authors who contribute such significant scientific and educational material to the Annals. The editorial board is grateful for your support, and we look forward to the future of the Annals.

Received for publication November 10, 2003. Accepted for publication November 12, 2003.
