INTRODUCTION TO THE PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS

Introduction of Dr. John M. Daly

Dr. Daly’s roots are in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he started his education and has most recently returned as the Dean of Temple University School of Medicine. Dr. Daly graduated from LaSalle University (Fig. 1) and obtained his medical degree from the Temple University School of Medicine. His general surgical training was completed in Houston, Texas, at Hermann Hospital and the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. He obtained special training in surgical oncology at the University of Texas Cancer Center, MD Anderson Hospital, and Tumor Institute in Houston.

Dr. Daly’s academic career began at MD Anderson and then Cornell University Medical College and the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. In 1980 Dr. Daly became an assistant professor and then rapidly an associate professor at Cornell University Medical College, and he was Associate Attending Surgeon in the Department of Surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center until 1985. During his association with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Dr. Daly maintained a robust research program and was a member of both the Colorectal Service and the Gastric and Mixed Tumor Service.

Dr. Daly returned to Philadelphia as Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology in the Department of Surgery, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and the Jonathan E. Rhodes Professor of Surgery. He maintained a highly successful clinical and research program and demonstrated leadership skills that led to his recruitment by the Weill Medical College of Cornell University and New York Hospital to be Surgeon in Chief of what is now the New York Presbyterian Hospital at Cornell. After 9 years in this position, he returned to Philadelphia last year as Dean of his alma mater, Temple University School of Medicine.

Dr. Daly is a member of all of the major scientific and medical societies, and prior to his presidency of the Society of Surgical Oncology, he was President of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition and Chair of the Commission on Cancer. He sits on the editorial boards of multiple medical journals and has been active with the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Daly has had long-standing peer-reviewed funding for his laboratory and has been mentor to many fellows in nutrition and oncology over the past 2 decades.

John and Mary Daly have been happily married for 32 years and have six wonderful children: John Jr., William, Brian, Timothy, Patrick, and Maureen (Fig. 2).

Dr. Daly, prior to being the President of the Society of Surgical Oncology, has been very active on committees and on the Executive Council. He has been on the Program Committee, has chaired the Education Committee, has chaired the Finance Committee, and was previously the Treasurer. John Daly, MD, FACS, has been an outstanding clinical surgeon, a highly productive physician scientist, respected educator, effective mentor, loving spouse and father, and leader within medical schools, the American Board of Surgery, and the Society of Surgical Oncology. The members of the Society are proud to have him as president (Fig. 3).
