ANNALS OF SURGICAL ONCOLOGY RANKING
The Annals of Surgical Oncology continues to be a valuable resource to physicians caring for surgical patients with cancer. Each year the scientific values of medical journals are compiled by the Institute for Scientific Information and expressed as Impact Factors. This Impact Factor is based on the frequency with which an original scientific article is cited in other journals and is a putative indicator of journal quality. The more times a scientific article from a journal is cited, the greater the impact and stature of the journal. In 2004, the Annals of Surgical Oncology was cited 3727 times, and the Impact Factor increased to 4.035. The Annals is ranked fourth among 139 surgery (Table 1
) and 28th among 123 oncology (Table 2
) journals. In 2003, the Annals was cited 2734 times, with an Impact Factor of 3.574, which placed the journal as seventh among 141 surgery and 33rd among 118 oncology journals. The Editorial Board is grateful to the authors who continue to support the journal by submitting high-quality work that is frequently cited by others.

Beginning in an upcoming issue, the online journal will have multimedia content. Three kinds of streaming video are available to view or submit for publication. Long submissions may be a maximum of 10 minutes in length, and the video is the article. Text for each video will be published in the print journal as a one-page summary with references. Short submissions are technical notes or brief communications, 2 to 3 minutes in length. Dynamic articles will complement the full-length print article by providing the opportunity to click on illustrations to view a video and enhance the impact of the publication. All video submissions undergo the same peer review as the print articles and can be cited. The Editorial Board encourages authors to submit newly created videos or work that may have been presented at a meeting and not previously cited.
ONLINE MANUSCRIPT PROCESSING
Beginning in January 2006, all manuscripts can be submitted online via Manuscript Central. This product is one of the leading online submission tools used by the STM publishing industry and has been adopted by more than 400 journals in 100+ disciplines. Manuscript Central benefits authors by providing a rapid method to submit manuscripts and allows tracking of a manuscript through the peer-review process. In addition, the editorial review is streamlined; authors receive a response from the editorial office in less time. To upload a manuscript, log onto the site at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/aso and follow the instructions.
ONLINE ACCESS
Members of the Society of Surgical Oncology receive the journal as a benefit of membership and now have complete access to the online journals of seven prominent international surgical societies (Table 3
). To access these journals, log onto the SpringerLink web site (http://www.springerlink.com) with the Springer assigned username and password and use the journal link to read the publication. In addition, every member of the respective societies has complete access to the online version of the Annals. This important initiative increases the readership and exposure of authors publishing in the Annals and provides an added benefit to members of the Society.
